Swing City

Swing City – Bios & Band Information

Swing City is a Northern California band based in Redding, comprised of six musicians. It features music from the 40’s thru 60’s, specializing in swing, standards, and jazz. For special occasions the band plays dance music – pop & rock from the 60’s & 70’s, but this music is reserved for weddings only. The members are very experienced musicians that have played all of their lives, which enables the band to bring to you a finesse and class that is not usually found in most bands.

Swing City not only plays great music, but it is able to entertain audiences with a joy and fun that is rare to find. It believes in lots of audience interaction and lots of stage action. The musicianship is terrific and will satisfy the most musically discerning ears.

Swing City is very versatile and draws from a large song list. The group’s instrumentation is as follows: guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, sax, trombone, and trumpet.

The group is prompt and accommodating, and the group’s leader, Frank DiSalvo, will handle your event with professionalism.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised in Frank’s vocal styling as he brings a professional quality to the music on the same level as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and many of the wonderful singers from that era. He can also change on a dime and sing rock ‘n roll and Pop from the 60’s & 70’s sounding authentic – like the original.

Swing City delivers to you a special brand of entertainment filled with warmth and lots of personality. Swing City makes a party fun, and you won’t be able to sit still. Once you’ve had them for your affair, you’ll have them back again and again.

Mike Gregory

Mike Gregory grew up in Southern California in the 60’s with the sounds of Frank Sinatra, Dave Brubeck and Nat King Cole on the turntable that his mother enjoyed along with the popular radio hits of the day. After learning a boogie woogie on the piano from a friend of his mother at the age of seven he found his way to the guitar and “surf music” with a good teacher to encourage him he was well on his way as a musician.

By the sixth grade he was in a gigging band “well a few gigs anyway” with matching shirts and played surf music one evening for a single dollar which his dad framed for him after they had played for a dinner party at the home of the drummer with the Mayor of Palm Springs as a guest.

Those were magical days indeed. Early musical influences were The Beatles, The Stones, Stevie Wonder and other Motown artists, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, The Band, early Genesis, and the San Francisco sound. Jazz came later and besides the greats of the fifties and sixties he loves the band The Yellowjackets the best.

As the years rolled by he continued to enjoy the guitar and bass and took music courses at a community college in Yucaipa, Calif. for a few years when the wander bug struck. After a stint in the American Continental Circus as a driver and lighting technician where Herb Miller (Glenn’s younger brother) was the music director and passing through Redding a few times on one of many road trips this area caught his eye. Mike eventually found a new home here when the pressure of the urban sprawl and smog back home was too much so he hit the road alone again to settled down raise a family and grow some roots.

Now in Redding some 25 years and having the good fortune to have played professionally over the last ten years with local bands like the Duane Elmore Jazz Ensamble, Sonata, Majical, Montuno Salad, Brown Shoe and Swing City, he couldn’t ask for a better group of friends and a place to live. He currently works at a music store and teaches bass and guitar.

Joe Larson

Joe Larsen joins the band as a Northern Californian “native” from Eureka, California. He has played trombone and baritone for over 35 years in various groups from orchestral, brass choirs and chamber music to symphonic, big band swing, and modem jazz ensembles. He has played and given private instruction in the Redding area for nearly 25 years. He has played with groups from Nashville, Tennessee to Bend, Oregon and has toured Hawaii and Alaska with a brass choir for two years.

His versatility in the band brings on the ability to transcend decades of music from one song to the next. He has a style and energy – coupled with his musical aptitude – that makes him one musician who truly is entertaining and fun to his audience.
